Unit Title: Plays Well With Others
Summary:
Using a freedom song from the Civil Rights Movement, students will learn to play an instrument to accomany the singing of the song. Activities will include listening to the song, researching and discussing historical significance, analyzing rhythm and pitch notation in the instrumental part, working in teacher selected groups to practice on a xylophone, metalaphone, or glockenspiel. By the end of the unit students will know how to identify the relationship between the song Woke Up This Morning and the Civil Rights Movement, and be able to read notation and play the music on a pitched instrument. Students will be graded based on classroom assignments with opportunities for individual as well as group collaboration. In addition to these formative and summative assessments, students will also be graded each week based on their active participation in class.
Curriculum Framing Questions:
Essential Question
How can we play well together?
Unit Questions
How do musicians work together to play music? What are my responsibilities when playing with a group? How does a conductor help the group?
Content Questions
What rhythms do I play? What instrument do I play? How do I play my instrument? What part of the musical score do I read? What pitches do I play? I’m playing music from what historical period? What dynamics should I use to play my part?
Irvin's Summative Assessment
The students will take turns within their groups performing their assigned instrumental accompaniment while listening to the voices on CD. Students who are not playing will watch and record comments of how the performers can improve in the future; a participation grade will be given based on the number of comments each student offers.
